Fun For Everyone by cheddarpaladin
Fun For Everyone
"Above all, videogames are meant to be just one thing: fun. Fun for everyone."

- Satoru Iwata

This one is in memory of Nintendo's late CEO and President Satoru Iwata who passed away a few days ago. I wanted to paint something featuring Nintendo characters he was most involved with, like Kirby and Pokemon, and also Luigi because of his Year of Luigi Nintendo Direct videos.

One thing that stood out to me while Iwata was President of Nintendo is his visible enjoyment with his job. His public appearances were always joyous and had showmanship and plenty of clowning around with Reggie and Miyamoto. It was always about fun, and I wanted to depict that in the painting with the characters just playing games and having fun.

Takes place in what I think Luigi's house could look like. Little references to him and the Mario universe here and there. I want that fire flower lamp.

Strayed from my comic style a bit here as I felt it would have been off on this more light-hearted scene. I wanted the bright colors to stand out and my usual bold black outlines would have ruined it, I think.

Thank you, Iwata.

Based on a photograph taken by :iconsamhaspowers: when she was in Africa, seen here: fav.me/d6xuea2
Drawn for her birthday.

I think we can all relate to this ape. He's all, "What am I doing with my life?" or "How did it all come to this?"

But it's probably more like, "I'M GOING BANANAS!"

Your major support guys from Metal Gear. Not all of them.

Gotta finish this project before then.

Zorra by cheddarpaladin
Zorra
Another new Cheddarverse character whose story revolves around a "perfect" mask that allows her to shed her normal identity and do whatever she desires. It's one of a handful of other totemic masks, each with a different power. Otherwise she's a red mage type. Roguish and charming with an air of sophistication.

Vampire Killers by cheddarpaladin
Vampire Killers
Download for full size.

The Belmont Clan is a powerful one. Tasked for many generations with the slaying of the Prince of Darkness upon his inevitable resurrection, they are the morning sun here to vanquish the horrible night.

Castlevania is one hell of a series that spans many console generations with a tale that spans over a thousand years. What I wanted to do here is make sense of the many concept arts and in-game sprites for the Belmonts. The same character can look vastly different from his promotional artwork than how he does in the game. And then there's the remakes, and other media adaptations, and sometimes just historical anachronisms that I wanted to correct. In short, this is what I think the Belmonts look like. In my head. Call them alts if you want.
Also, only did the playable Belmonts canonical to IGA's timeline. So no Sonia because she's not canon, and no Soleiyu because he wasn't playable. Etc.

1094 - Leon Belmont
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2)
Sub-Weapon: Crystal
The man who took a whip made from alchemy and transformed it into the legendary Vampire Killer. Betrayed by the man who would one day become Dracula, he pledged his entire bloodline to the service of slaying the evil and the night itself.

I figured that since Leon was a former lord and knight during the crusades, he should at least look like one, unlike his in-game appearance more suited to the streets of Akihabara than a feudal Transylvanian castle. So I looked up some 11th century crusader armor for inspiration and added that to his normal, but more toned down appearance. Pretty much just chainmail.

1476 - Trevor Belmont
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES), Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (PS2)
Sub-Weapon: Cross
The first man to slay Dracula and without the magical abilities of his descendants. After this feat he would marry the witch Sypha Belnades and their combined bloodlines would forge a grand legacy of very powerful vampire hunters.

Trevor is part of a trio of protagonists who were all designed to look alike. He and Christopher were both designed to look like Simon, who is probably designed to look like Conan the Barbarian as that was popular at the time (lots of other videogame protagonists did this as well). But he's had several redesigns over the years so I drew from those. What separates him most from the others is that his sprite got to feature a cape in the opening cutscene, so I rolled with that. Also, he's typically featured with either a headband or eyepatch, so I went full Big Boss and used both. Ancestor to the series' main protag after all.

1576 - Christopher Belmont
Castlevania: the Adventure (GB), Castlevania: Belmont's Revenge (GB)
Sub-Weapon: none
100 years after he was first slain, Dracula rose again. So came Christopher Belmont, without even the power of the legendary sub-weapons to aid him. But he was not without his own tricks. He could whip bolts of flame from the Vampire Killer, a technique unique to him alone.
After slaying him once, Dracula's followers kidnapped his very son, Soleiyu, as a vessel in which to resurrect their master. This time, it was personal. So once again, Belmont set out to have his revenge.

Christopher was certainly the hardest to design. He's very poorly known, only being on the Game Boy games and often forgotten. Even Sonia gets more recognition for her one non-canonical appearance due to her importance as the only female Belmont. Anyway, his promotional material was lackluster. He was, however, the star of a limited Castlevania comic series where his look got a big overhaul. So I combined his comic look with some of the trappings from his concept art like the circlet and the scale mantle. Whippin' fireballs, man.

1691 - Simon Belmont
Castlevania (NES), Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
Sub-Weapon: Axe
The most famous of the clan is none other than Simon Belmont. The man who brought the legend to the masses and made the Belmont name synonymous with slaying vampires. Upon destroying Dracula during his 17th century resurrection, a curse was placed upon Simon that he could only remove by reviving Dracula again himself and slaying him once more. What a horrible night to have a curse.

Simon's had the most redesigns out of any of them. Castlevania has been remade a gorrillion times and each time Simon's been drawn a little differently. I used the design from Simon's Quest for most of his look, but took bits from his other designs, even Gabriel Belmont's armor from Lords of Shadow (which was inspired by Simon's CV2 look) to make him the badass barbarian butcher of beasts that he is. Also flame whip and shield for maximum Simon.

1748 - Juste Belmont
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)
Sub-Weapon: Dagger
Juste was a very powerful vampire hunter and took more to the sorcery half of his bloodline than his other clansmen. Once his friend Lydie went missing, he and his ninja friend Maxim tracked her to a mysterious castle. Could the Prince of Darkness somehow be involved?

Juste is pretty much his flamboyant, matador magician lookin' self. I chose for him to be using his magic, since that's what defines him from the other Belmonts. He's got the Book of Wind in his hand and is using the Dagger spell fusion as that makes the popular 1000 Blades technique. Crazy DPS boss killer.

1792 - Richter Belmont
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (PCE), Casltevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)
Sub-Weapon: Holy Water
The necromancer, Shaft, has brought the evil back from beyond and captured many maidens to sacrifice including Richter Belmont's beloved Annette. Using his vast array of physical abilities including the powerful Item Crash techniques, he and a young druid named Maria fought Dracula and slayed him once again. At least for now...
What IS a man, anyway?

I love that Richter looked like a blue raspberry flavor of Ryu from Street Fighter in his first appearance. Makes sense since he's got a lot of cool moves, kinda like a monk. He's very much a 90s anime protagonist in Rondo. Very "aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and eyebrows. Shouting all of his special moves' names out loud. HYDROOOO STOOORM!

1999 - Julius Belmont
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA), Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
Sub-Weapon: Grand Cross
The Vampire Killer fell out of the hands of the Belmonts for nearly 200 years, utilized by other vampire hunters in other threats from Dracula and his followers. But at the turn of the new millennium, the Prince of Darkness returned for his greatest coup yet. Known as the Demon Castle War, the world fell into its darkest hour. It was then that a new Belmont took back the whip. More powerful than the others before him, he slayed Dracula once again, and for good this time, but at the cost of his memory. And the Demon Castle War came to an end along with the threat of it ever happening again.
Or so it was believed.

It's a shame there will never be a game set during the 1999 Demon Castle War. Julius was older during his playable Julius Mode in the Sorrow games, and he was never the main protagonist. I can imagine he was even more impressive in his prime, but even at almost 60 he uses an Item Crash like any of the others would use a regular sub-weapon. He even does all of the cool moves Richter can do in SotN. That and he does a lot of other magic mumbo-jumbo behind the scenes. Very powerful dude.

Shame Konami won't be making any more Castlevania's. But I am looking forward to IGA's independent project, Bloodstained. Gonna be a brand new Gothic Horror Metroidvania. Check that out and support it. It'll be great to see what he can do without Konami's control.

Damn, I need to get crackin'.

And as always, I need to write more JoaP.
As I live and breathe, I need to write MOAR JOAP.
Yeah, I still haven't given up on it, yet.

Hey, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I've been working alot lately and it's left me rather unmotivated to do much painting. I didn't want to start work on our trade until felt like I could manage both work and art. I'm getting there.

I have a piece I've been working on for about a month and a half now that I wanted to finish before I started on your pkmn team. I didn't think it'd take me this long. Hell, I still haven't thought of my ideal team, yet.

Anyway, when I finish what I've been working on, I'll get back to you again. I just didn't want you to think I'd forgotten.
