Description
In honor of the Metal Gear series coming to a close, I've painted something for each canon game in the saga.
This one is for the very first Metal Gear game, 1987's Metal Gear, specifically the MSX version. The very basic plot is defined in this game. You control Solid Snake, a rookie agent of special operations unit FOXHOUND on a mission to infiltrate the enemy base, Outer Heaven, rescue fellow operative Gray Fox, and destroy a new secret weapon known only as "Metal Gear". The game defined the stealth genre and otherwise plays like Zelda with guns with a hint of Metroid's atmosphere, which is interesting since all three games were in development at the same time.
The characters in the first game had very little concept art to go from, and the 8-bit pallet left lots to the imagination when going off of the sprites. So I did a lot of character design here myself using information about the characters from the manual, the wiki, and their actions in the game.
From left to right, starting with the pictures for the radio support team:
Kyle Schneider is the leader of the resistance at Outer Heaven, and one of your main contacts throughout the game.
Diane is a former new wave artist who familiarized herself with the members of Outer Heaven and primarily gives Snake information about the bosses.
Jennifer infiltrated Outer Heaven's medical staff and can provide Snake with behind the scenes help, but only if he proves himself worthy.
Ellen Madnar is the daughter of Dr. Madnar and is one of the hostages of Outer Heaven.
Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar is a talented roboticist and is being forced to work on Metal Gear as one of the hostages of Outer Heaven.
Gray Fox is the premiere agent of FOXHOUND and was originally sent in to Outer Heaven before Solid Snake, he was captured and is now one of the hostages of Outer Heaven.
Big Boss is the CO of FOXHOUND and your primary contact. He gives Snake advice for every situation and is regarded as one of the greatest soldiers who ever lived.
Solid Snake is the main character of the game and this is his first mission with FOXHOUND. He is highly trained and a former Green Beret, so he has all the skills necessary to get in, complete the mission, and get out.
Shotgunner is the warden of Outer Heaven's prison. He uses a shotgun with great efficiency.
Machinegun Kid is former SAS and uses a light machine gun as well as most soldiers could use an assault rifle.
Fire Trooper uses a flame thrower as his primary weapon. He's outfitted in a fireproof suit.
Dirty Duck is a terrorist who joined with Outer Heaven. He's very proficient with boomerangs and uses hostages as human shields in his tactics.
TX-11 "Bloody Brad" is an android developed by Dr. Madnar. He's nigh indestructible, and very fast despite his great size. Otherwise known as "Arnold" he's pretty much the titular character from "the Terminator" movies.
